I've ordered to-go from Americana on a few occasions, and have never been disappointed. In fact, every time I order, I'm further delighted. It's really that good.
But I had never actually dined in at Americana. To say that it was better than to-go is definitely an understatement.
The atmosphere is cozy at the same time it's chic and upscale. I had no problem feeling as comfortable in jeans and Chucks as did the table of Woo Girls celebrating a birthday in ultra short and glittery dresses next to us. It's dark and moody, even. A modern throwback, with pin-up girls on the walls and a stamped ceiling. You can sit by the windows and watch the Locust traffic or in the cozier balcony.
The staff could not be friendlier. I am a terrible order-er. It takes me a while to know what I want, and in most places you can just FEEL the resentment coming from your server. Not this time! I can't recall her name, I'm awful that way, but she was wonderful. My water glass was never dry.
The food... I don't even know where to begin. It is truly American. A bit of fusion, a ton of modern classics. Fully amazing.
I started with a Moscow Mule, which was good, but not better than the Mule I prefer from Zombie Burger. It just wasn't quite as gingery as I'd like.
I have had the Truffled Mac and Cheese and the Tiki Burger to go. Both are awesome. I ordered the Loaded Mac and Cheese, with peppered brown sugar bacon, spinach, roasted mushrooms, and peppered goat cheese, was out of this world good. It was so amazing, that when I accidentally left my leftovers on the table, I was a little sad.
My lovely dining partners ordered the Airline Chicken and the Truffled Mac. I have a serious aversion to bone-in foods, but I tried the chicken anyway. Breathtaking. I'd order it, even with bones. The side of mashed potato was also so good, I kept swiping bites from his plate. Sorry about that, Jake. Sorry I'm not sorry.
I was far too full for dessert, but that's for another time.
Overall, Americana is my favorite restaurant in Iowa. For sure. I'll let you know if there's anything better. It's unlikely, but I'll let you know.
Visit Americana's website. Make a reservation. You will not regret it.
